Vermiculite combines really well with sphagnum moss to create a light, moisture retentive orchid mix. We supply vermiculite in gravel-sized particles. One thing to consider is that although vermiculite will open up the mix, it will also retain water and compact. That’s why using vermiculite for orchids is only as a part of a total mix is better. Orchid Plants won’t grow well in normal soil and you will find that soil does not allow enough air to flow around orchid roots. The idea when potting orchids is to find materials that will anchor orchid roots. The best materials are a media that allows air to still move around them. Bark and moss are often mixed with perlite, vermiculite, or charcoal to keep the mix open and permit air flow.
Horticultural vermiculite is processed using massive heat that expands it into accordion shaped pellets composed of many layers of quite thin plates.
Using VERMICULITE for Orchids is easy – just mix up the ingredients required and away you go!
It will not rot, deteriorate, or grow mould and lasts, is odourless, non-toxic and sterile. VERMICULITE for Orchids may be just what you are looking for!
Vermiculite is used by plant growers – and many Orchid hobbyists right around Australia. Just like these growers, you can also mix vermiculite into your potting media and achieve an aerated mix.
